Altered Books

We are going to begin our altered books. this will be a long term project, so we will be working on it all semester.  Your altered book needs to have a theme.  Your theme needs to be general enough you can make atleast 20 pages about it.
 i.e. Music-
  • bands
  • genres
  • festival
  • tour posters
Is just a short example of some branches you could make from music.  Below are a list of pages you need to make throughout the semester:

Altered Book Requirements:

·       Cover – Title, Name, at least 2 types of media.  Cover must be altered from original state

·       Table of Content: This will be a work in progress, as you do pages, you’ll add to it.  Make sure you leave at least 3 pages in the beginning for this.

·       Description:  this will be a brief description of your theme.  Why did you choose it?  What does it mean to you?  2 types of media.

·       Fully Painted Page- none of the original page is showing.  Journal on this page.  Use the entire page.

·       Collage-  At least 5 pieces.

·       Fold Out-  Something must fold out.  This can be a door with something behind it, writing, or anything you want that folds out from the original page.

·       Stenciling-  Create your own stencils or use pre-made to do stenciling on your pages.  Spray paint?  Brush painting?

·       Pocket page.  Create a pocket to hold something.  Objects?  Notes?  Drawings?  Memories?  Anything going with your theme.

·       3 folded pages-  Anyway you want, the must be 3 throughout your book.

·       Original Text incorporated into alterations.

·       3-D addition somewhere in your book.  It can be added on the page, or in a window that is cut in.

·       Your own drawing or sketch.

·       Added Texture-  Actual or simulated.

·       1 page filled with your own writing.

·       Threading or stitching.  Hand or machine.  Designs, added to an existing image, or sewing pages together.

·       Cut out or a window exposing something behind.

·       Stamp something in…possibly some of you printmaking projects!!!

·       Something Sticking out beyond the standard book edges.

·       Added photograph.  This can be a real photo, copy, or printed from computer.

·       3 choice pages.

You may do these in any order.  Each requirement is a new page, so you will have a minimum of 20 pages.  You can do more on your own too make it that much cooler!!!You will have one page due a week along with your sketchbook.  We will do the cover, description page, and one required page in class for the next 7 days.  Look online, in books, and at other students work to get inspired.  The more you see, the more ideas you will have.  BE CREATIVE.  This is a book full of your art, so make it represent who you are as an artist!!  Every page will go along with your theme, so choose wisely.
Here are some cover examples:
